Identifying Structural Thresholds in Annual Grass–Invaded Rangelands

چکیده

Invasive plants have an increasing impact on the ecological and economic functions of natural systems. Cheatgrass ( Bromus tectorum L.) is invasive annual grass that widely impactful throughout most western United States. Describing management thresholds in cheatgrass-invaded rangelands may help managers conserve native plant communities. The objective this research was to determine if direct, predictable relationships exist between pretreatment vegetation conditions post-treatment changes perennial biomass following cheatgrass control. We sampled locations representing a gradient cheatgrass-to–perennial ratios before application two imazapic formulations—liquid with water carrier dry sand/granular carrier—at field sites near Saratoga Pinedale, Wyoming. monitored responses 1 yr treatment 2 treatment. observed general pattern posttreatment increases were greater where relative canopy cover higher, magnitudes increase varied according site conditions. tentatively suggest at 4:1, increased herbicide > 10:1, beyond which grasses no longer observed. Such provide starting point for threshold identification be transferrable across communities but need explored broader scale adequately make recommendations.

Identifying thresholds for object-oriented software metrics

Despite the importance of software metrics and the large number of proposed metrics, they have not been widely applied in industry yet. One reason might be that, for most metrics, the range of expected values, i.e., reference values are not known. This paper presents results of a study on the structure of a large collection of open-source programs developed in Java, of varying sizes and from di...

Identifying Thresholds for Ecosystem-Based Management

BACKGROUND One of the greatest obstacles to moving ecosystem-based management (EBM) from concept to practice is the lack of a systematic approach to defining ecosystem-level decision criteria, or reference points that trigger management action. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To assist resource managers and policymakers in developing EBM decision criteria, we introduce a quantitative, transfer...

From desert to Mediterranean rangelands: will increasing drought and inter-annual rainfall variability affect herbaceous annual primary productivity?

Climate change is predicted to alter the rainfall regime in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin: total annual rainfall will decrease, while seasonal and inter-annual variation in rainfall will increase. Such changes in the rainfall regime could potentially lead to large-scale changes in aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in the region. We conducted a data-driven evaluation of herbaceous ANP...

Identifying structural domains in proteins.

Analysis of protein structures typically beginswith decomposition of the structure intomore basic units called structural domains. The underlying goal is to reduce a complex protein structure to a set of simpler, yet structurallymeaningful units, each ofwhich can be analyzed independently. Structural semi-independence of domains is their hallmark: domains often have compact structure that can f...

Identifying Structural Motifs in Proteins

In biological macromolecules, structural patterns (motifs) are often repeated across different molecules. Detection of these common motifs in a new molecule can provide useful clues to the functional properties of such a molecule. We formulate the problem of identifying a given structural motif (pattern) in a target protein (example) and discuss the notion of complete matches vis-a-vis partial ...
